neck1.jpg (26302 bytes) This picture shows (rather poorly) The jig I built to hold a neck while I shape it with a bastard file. I don't really have a shop where I could mount a vide to hold the jig, but the workmate pictured here worked great, and allowed me to carry everything out under a shade tree in the back yard, which was a great experience. I considered using 'Shade Tree' as the name for my mandolins (Assuming I continue to build them).
This picture shows the truss rod slot and the router table I used to cut it. This is a very inexpensive router and table. It doesn't cost a ton of money to do this, although I suppose it's easier with more sophisticated tools. neck2.jpg (29165 bytes)
neck3.jpg (23275 bytes) Here is some detail showing the truss rod installed. I formed the truss rod nut pocket with the sanding drum on my Dremel tool. You can see some of the beautiful grain in the wood used for the neck in this shot. Stewart MacDonald supplied wood that exceeded all of my expectations.
Here's the peghead cut in the traditional Gibson F-5 Shape. I was worried about how this would turn out, but I ended up very pleased. We'll see how it looks with the inlay (If I ever decide on a name). neck4.jpg (10023 bytes)
